On Saturday April 2nd the Students of El Toro Judo Club (Laguna Niguel, CA) held an event to raise funds for the Red Cross Relief efforts in Japan. Many club members have friends and families affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami.
To raise funds the junior class supported by their parents and instructors held a ‘Ukemi-athon’. Typically the class does these at the beginning of every class for a minute or so. However, for the ‘Ukemi-athon’ the students performed this drill repeatedly for a period of 15 minutes. This was an exercise in stamina, endurance and enthusiasm. Each student obtained sponsors for this event and the club has so far earned over $2000.
The Students are boys and girls aged 5 to 14 and the average run of Ukemi was over 150 in the 15 minute window.
