Coaching

Dr. Matsumoto was the head instructor and coach for Berkeley Judo Club and the East Bay Judo Institute. He was a national coach for USA Judo from 1989-1996. Since the 1980s through 2015 he has consistently produced medalists at all levels of competition including national and international. His athletes have represented our country at the highest levels of international competition including Pan American Championships, the World Championships, and also the Olympic Games. His most successful athletes include 2008 Olympian and Junior World Silver Medalist Sayaka Torra and 2012 IJF Olympic Qualified Alternate Michael Eldred. He has been recognized by the USOC as the Developmental Coach of the Year in Judo 1999 and Coach of the Year in Judo 2003. He has also been recognized by the USJF as the Senior Female Coach of the Year in 2002 & 2003, and also as the Youth Female Coach of the Year in 2002. Over the last 30 years, he has built the East Bay Judo Institute into a large dojo with an average annual membership of 100+ a testament to quality of their instruction and programs.

Tournament

Dr. Matsumoto has demonstrated his major tournament management and administrative excellence in serving as the Event Director for several national events that include: 1994(?) US National Ladder Championships, 1996 USJF Jr., Youth, & Team National Championships, 1996 U.S. Senior National Championships, 2000 USJF Jr., Youth, Team, and Kata National Championships, and 2000 USA Judo Jr. Olympics. As a certified tournament official, Dr Matsumoto received his International Referee (A) license from the IJF.

Program Administrator

Dr. Matsumoto was USJF’s first Executive Secretary early in the 1980. That position eventually evolved into Dr. Matsumoto becoming our first Executive Director and eventual creation of the National Office to provide service to our members. He also served as our Development Committee Chairperson for a number of years. He also did a stint from 1996-2000 as USA Judo’s Director of Development. During this time, he served as the Team Leader or Delegation Chief to the Olympic Games and several world championships.

Other Contributions

The application of Dr. Matsumoto’s intellect and drive for truth have provided USJF judo with numerous foundational data points and principles. He has conducted and published judo specific research to help promote judo and it’s benefits. He has had several books on judo that he has authored or co-authored these include: the history book published by USJF, Judo in the U.S.: A Century of Dedication; Introduction to Kodokan Judo: History and Philosophy; Judo: A Sport and a Way of Life; and The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat. Dr. Matsumoto is one of only two (2) individuals recognized as official International Judo Federation Researchers.

On behalf of USJF, he has dabbled in video production to produce two (2) well-received introductory judo videos to help expose and produce an educational experience for those new to judo.

Judo Pioneer

Dr. Matsumoto’s extensive foundation in research and education motivated him to push more education for teachers and coaches. This foundation led to pioneering the national judo conference programs for both USJF and USA Judo. Additional educational momentum pioneered the creation of the original IJF World Judo Conference in 1999 and the International Association of Judo Researchers. His passion for education in judo has innovated opportunities in education and higher exposure for judo teachers, coaches, and students.
